What Makes Lomi Lomi Massage So Different?
When I first heard about Lomi Lomi massage, I'll admit I thought it was simply another massage technique I could add to my practice.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
Throughout my career, I've invested thousands of hours studying massage therapy, orthopedic assessment, anatomy, movement, and body mechanics. Continuing education has always been one of my passions, so when I discovered Lomi Lomi, I approached it the same way I approach everything else - I wanted to truly understand it before offering it to clients.
What surprised me wasn't just the techniques.
It was the philosophy.
Lomi Lomi isn't simply about how you massage someone's muscles. It's about how you care for the person on your table.
That perspective stayed with me long after my training ended.
Before offering Lomi Lomi professionally, I completed more than 50 hours of formal education and spent well over 100 hours practicing and refining the techniques. I wanted to be confident that I wasn't just performing the movements - I understood the experience I was trying to create.
Today, Lomi Lomi has become one of my favorite services because it offers something many of us don't get enough of.
Permission to slow down.
So, What Exactly Is Lomi Lomi?
Lomi Lomi (pronounced LOH-mee LOH-mee) is a style of Hawaiian bodywork that has been practiced and passed down through generations. While different teachers and lineages have their own unique approaches, most share a common philosophy: caring for the whole person rather than focusing only on isolated areas of tension.
If you've only experienced Swedish massage or deep tissue massage, the difference becomes apparent almost immediately.
Instead of moving from one muscle to the next, Lomi Lomi often uses long, flowing, rhythmic strokes that connect the entire body. Rather than feeling like individual techniques performed one after another, the massage unfolds as one continuous experience.
Many clients tell me afterward that they can't quite explain what felt different - they just know it did.
I understand exactly what they mean.
It's difficult to put into words until you've experienced it yourself.
It's Not About One Muscle
One of the things I enjoy most about orthopedic massage is solving problems.
If someone comes into my office with shoulder pain, hip discomfort, or an injury that's limiting their movement, I genuinely enjoy figuring out what's contributing to that problem and developing a treatment plan.
That kind of work is analytical.
It's detailed.
It's incredibly rewarding.
But over the years I've learned something equally important.
Not every client needs that kind of session.
Sometimes people don't come in because one muscle hurts.
They come in because life has been heavy.
They've been under constant stress.
They're sleeping poorly.
They're mentally exhausted.
They've spent months taking care of everyone except themselves.
One of the things I've noticed over the years is that clients rarely say, "I need help relaxing."
Instead, they tell me about their headaches.
Their tight neck.
Their sore shoulders.
Their aching back.
But after the massage, what they often talk about isn't the muscle we worked on.
They'll say something like,
"I didn't realize how much I needed that."
Or...
"I feel lighter."
Or simply...
"I haven't felt this relaxed in a long time."
I think that's one of the beautiful things about Lomi Lomi.
Sometimes it gives us something we didn't even realize we were missing.
The Power of Flow
If you've read anything about Lomi Lomi, you've probably heard people describe its long, flowing strokes.
That's certainly one of its defining characteristics, but I don't think the flow is important simply because it looks beautiful.
I think it's important because of how it feels.
Rather than constantly lifting my hands, changing direction, or moving from one isolated area to another, Lomi Lomi allows the massage to develop a natural rhythm.
The body doesn't have to keep adjusting to something new every few seconds.
Instead, it begins to settle.
I also use my forearms extensively throughout the session.
People sometimes ask why.
The answer is actually pretty simple.
The forearm creates broad, comfortable contact. Instead of concentrating pressure into a thumb or fingertip, it distributes that pressure over a much larger surface area.
That often allows me to work surprisingly deeply while still keeping the experience comfortable and relaxing.
It's a good reminder that effective massage doesn't always have to hurt.
I've never believed discomfort should be the goal.
Sometimes deeper pressure is exactly what's needed.
Sometimes it isn't.
Sometimes the body lets go more easily when it feels safe than when it's being forced.
Presence Matters
One lesson Lomi Lomi continues to teach me is that every person who walks into my office is more than a list of symptoms.
Every person has a story.
They may be carrying stress, grief, responsibilities, uncertainty, or simply the exhaustion that comes from trying to keep up with life.
I may never know everything they're carrying.
And I don't need to.
My job is to meet them where they are that day.
Whether someone comes in hoping to unwind after a stressful week or simply wants an hour where nobody is asking anything of them, I consider it a privilege to provide that space.
For that hour, they don't have to solve problems.
Answer emails.
Make decisions.
Take care of everyone else.
They simply get to receive care.
In today's world, that's rarer than it should be.
Slowing Down Is Harder Than Ever
Take a moment and think about what most days look like.
Many of us wake up to an alarm, check our phones before getting out of bed, rush through work, answer texts and emails throughout the day, come home to family responsibilities, and finish the evening scrolling through more information before finally trying to fall asleep.
Even when we're resting, our minds often aren't.
We're constantly stimulated.
Constantly planning.
Constantly solving the next problem.
I've noticed something interesting during massage sessions.
For the first several minutes, many clients are still mentally somewhere else. They're replaying conversations, thinking about work, or making tomorrow's to-do list.
Then, almost without realizing it, something begins to change.
Their breathing slows.
Their shoulders soften.
The muscles in their face relax.
Sometimes I can actually feel their entire body let out a sigh.
Those moments are one of the reasons I love being a massage therapist.
Not because I "fixed" something.
But because I watched someone remember what it feels like to truly relax.
And I think that's something many of us need far more often than we realize.
Is Lomi Lomi Right for You?
One of the questions I hear most often is, "Who is Lomi Lomi best for?"
The honest answer is...it depends on what you're looking for.
If you're dealing with a recent injury, chronic pain, or a specific orthopedic condition that needs to be evaluated, I'll often recommend a different approach. My background is in orthopedic and sports massage, and there are times when assessment, targeted treatment, and a focused plan of care are exactly what's needed.
Lomi Lomi isn't meant to replace those approaches.
It's meant to offer something different.
In my experience, it's an excellent choice for people who:
Feel mentally or emotionally drained.
Have trouble slowing their minds down.
Spend most of their time taking care of everyone else.
Carry stress throughout their entire body rather than in one specific area.
Want to experience massage as more than simply "working out knots."
Enjoy flowing, continuous movement instead of highly localized treatment.
Are looking for deep relaxation without feeling like they have to endure painful pressure.
Many people schedule their first Lomi Lomi session because they're curious.
What brings them back is how they feel afterward.
What Can You Expect During Your First Session?
If you've never had Lomi Lomi before, it's completely normal to wonder what the experience will be like.
Every session begins with a conversation.
We'll talk about how you've been feeling, what you're hoping to get out of the session, any health concerns I should know about, and whether there are areas you'd like me to pay special attention to.
From there, your only job is to relax.
One of the biggest differences you'll notice is the rhythm of the massage. Instead of frequent pauses while I move from one muscle group to another, the session develops naturally through long, connected movements that often travel across larger areas of the body.
You'll notice that I use both my hands and my forearms throughout the session. This allows me to maintain continuous contact while adjusting pressure in a way that feels smooth and comfortable.
Some people fall asleep.
Some spend the hour quietly reflecting.
Others simply enjoy the rare experience of not having to think about anything for a while.
There isn't a right or wrong way to experience Lomi Lomi.
One thing I often tell first-time clients is this:
You don't have to help me.
You don't have to wonder if you're relaxing correctly.
You don't have to keep a conversation going.
You don't have to apologize for falling asleep.
You don't have to do anything except allow yourself to receive.
For many people, that's actually the hardest part.
Common Misconceptions About Lomi Lomi
"Is it just a light massage?"
Not at all.
While Lomi Lomi is known for relaxation, relaxation doesn't automatically mean light pressure.
The broad contact created by the forearms often allows me to work more deeply than people expect while still keeping the experience comfortable. Rather than concentrating pressure into one small point, it's spread over a larger area, creating depth without unnecessary discomfort.
The pressure is always adjusted to your comfort level and your goals.
"Is it the same as Swedish massage?"
There are certainly similarities. Both can be relaxing and use long, gliding strokes.
What makes Lomi Lomi unique is the way those strokes connect together. The session often feels less like a series of techniques and more like one continuous flow.
Clients frequently tell me that they stopped trying to figure out what I was doing and simply settled into the experience.
To me, that's one of the hallmarks of Lomi Lomi.
"Do I have to be interested in Hawaiian culture?"
Not at all.
Lomi Lomi has deep cultural roots in Hawaii, and I have tremendous respect for those traditions and the teachers who have preserved and shared them.
My role is to honor what I've learned while creating a welcoming experience for every client, regardless of their background or beliefs.
You don't need to know anything about Lomi Lomi before your first appointment.
Curiosity is enough.
Why I Chose to Offer Lomi Lomi
Every service on my menu has earned its place.
I don't add new modalities simply because they're popular or because they look interesting on social media.
If I'm going to offer something, I want to believe in it.
I want to understand it.
And I want to feel confident that it genuinely benefits the people who trust me with their care.
Lomi Lomi checked every one of those boxes.
The more I studied it, the more I appreciated its simplicity.
Not because the techniques are simple—they aren't.
But because the message is.
Slow down.
Be present.
Pay attention.
Care for the whole person.
Those principles resonate deeply with me, both as a therapist and as an educator.
After years of teaching anatomy, biomechanics, and clinical reasoning, Lomi Lomi serves as a reminder that while knowledge and skill are essential, they aren't the whole story.
Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer another person is our complete attention.
That's something I hope every client feels when they walk through my door.
My Hope for Every Client
When someone leaves my office after a Lomi Lomi session, I certainly hope they feel less tension in their muscles.
I hope they move a little easier.
I hope they're more comfortable.
But more than anything, I hope they leave feeling different.
A little calmer.
A little lighter.
A little more connected to themselves than when they arrived.
Because in a world that's constantly asking us to do more, be more, and move faster, maybe one of the healthiest things we can do is give ourselves permission to slow down.
That's what Lomi Lomi has taught me.
And it's why I'm grateful to be able to share it with others.
